Kemira Kemi in Helsingborg, Sweden, has been awarded with the 2014 E-Prize – the most prestigious energy prize in Sweden. The official awards ceremony was held on October 8, 2014 in Stockholm.
“The prize is proof that we have been successful in taking a comprehensive approach to energy work and working purposefully on our energy consumption, energy efficiency and energy awareness. The award is a great recognition of the efforts of many people for a long time”, says Emma Gunnarsson, Project engineer, Energy, Kemira, who accepted the award with Adam Jomaa, Manager, Industry Park of Sweden.

A large surplus of energy is generated in Kemira’s processes, which provides great opportunities for climate-smart solutions, as the energy is climate neutral. Over the past 40 years, part of this energy has been used in the Helsingborg district heating network and today, the supply from Kemira accounts for about 30 percent of the total energy that goes out via the district heating network. This makes the company one of Sweden’s largest suppliers of recycled energy to the community.
“We have also become better at using our own recycled energy. Today it is used to generate electricity, and also for heating in production processes and facilities. Since 2006, we have replaced a considerable proportion of natural gas usage with recycled energy. The recycled energy currently accounts for 60 per cent of our total energy turnover in industrial parks”, says Adam Jomaa.
The jury assesses the amount of energy saved in relation to the total use, the climate benefit of the measures, how innovative they were, and to what extent they contributed to increasing the profitability and competitiveness of the company.
It is not only Kemira that benefits from the energy. At Kemira’s production area an entire industrial park has grown up, Industry Park of Sweden. The industrial park, which is owned by Kemira, is a concept based on industrial symbiosis, creating business value through cooperation, innovative solutions and by sharing resources. All companies in this area have therefore been able to make use of climate-smart utilities and energy.
“Thanks to cooperation with other companies in and outside the industrial park, we have jointly succeeded in reducing our environmental and climate impact, while simultaneously lowering costs. In addition to traditional energy efficiency, it is about finding common synergies and creating solutions that would not have been possible individually”, Adam Jomaa continues.
Kemira won the 2014 E-prize with this statement: “Together is the watchword. With broad cooperation between the businesses and all stages of production, it’s possible to benefit from each other’s needs and surpluses. Innovative and systematic efforts for more effective energy consumption to the smallest detail.”
The E-Prize is awarded by E.ON in cooperation with business magazine Veckans Affärer to businesses that based on their own preconditions reduce their energy consumption in the most innovative and business-oriented manner. The prize is awarded in three categories: Major businesses, small and medium-sized businesses and the public sector. The prize is awarded for the sixth time this year. Other finalists in the Major businesses category are were Nordic Sugar and Höganäs Sweden AB.
