Kemira to open a new production plant in Nanjing, China

Kemira will open a new production plant in the Nanjing Industrial Park. We asked Senior Vice President Kenneth Nystén to tell us more.

Why is Kemira interested in China?

Currently, Asia equals growth. For example, half of the global increase in paper demand comes from Asia, and China represents the major part of the growth in Asia.

We have to be near our customers, also in terms of production, to be able to offer them competitive prices and the best possible service. Local production near Kemira’s R&D center in China enables us to customize our offering to the needs of local customers. Kemira’s plant in Nanjing will be open next summer.

What will it produce?

We will manufacture chemicals for special processes, and the plant will serve all our customer segments. It will also allow for an extensive product range and short transportation times.

In addition to the Nanjing plant, what does your portfolio include in China?

We manufacture AKD wax, used for hydrophobation of paper in Yanzhou. The plant is cutting-edge and, I understand, the largest AKD plant in the world.

The new plant has been described as trailblazing. What does this mean in practice?

The plant has been designed by a team of experts who represent Kemira’s best process knowledge globally. The technology will be top-notch in the industry, and we will make extensive use of automation.

You will hire approximately 100 employees. What role will occupational safety play in their orientation?

It is of primary importance in all of our production locations. Each employee’s personal training program will cover process and personal safety.

What can Asia teach other markets?

Our employees in Asia have excellent team spirit, a strong desire for professional development and an impressive work ethic. This type of positivity could be exported. It is an honor and a pleasure to work with such a team.
