Meet the expert: Driving customer profits in oil and gas with Randy Prater

​Well-known and respected in the oil and gas industry, Randy Prater serves as a Senior Technical Manager, Improved Oil Recovery (IOR) at Kemira.

A main part of Randy’s role involves talking daily with our customers in the field, ensuring that they have the best chemistry know-how available to them to operate their oil and gas wells and fields as efficiently and profitably as possible.

Over 40 years of experience

I started in the oilfield services industry 1977 as a field technician. 40 years later and now with Kemira, my primary responsibility is meeting with customers and reviewing each well and field histories, information and production data and then developing a technical proposal suitable for each unique setup. My task is to show how Kemira’s products and services will help operations by improving production yield, waterflood injection profiles and conformance, and by reducing water production, disposal and handling costs.
Taking learnings to evolution
 
The chemistries available to the oil and gas industry have evolved tremendously over the years, and are now performing better than ever. The feedback from customers is that Kemira has done a fantastic job of listening to their needs and taking the learnings from each unique experience during the IOR processes.
 
We learn what’s worked and what hasn’t, and we use this information to apply more innovative products and services. It has been very gratifying to see the tenacity of the Kemira IOR team turn past competitor failures into glowing successes, through objective failure analysis and problem-solving approaches. These innovations have caused many historically-difficult IOR processes to become far more successful – and have greatly increased Kemira’s visibility from a relative unknown in the IOR marketplace to being regarded as one of the leaders in IOR chemistry.
Since joining Kemira, I’ve seen a tremendous amount of innovation for our oil and gas customers over the years.
Exciting future ahead
 
Industry-wide acceptance of IOR as a viable method to help produce oil much more efficiently is exciting and something I see rapidly evolving. The future looks good for our customers thanks to the profitability, cost-savings and efficiencies that it offers.
