Kemira hits a grand slam in railway safety

Kemira was recently awarded the prestigious Grand Slam Award by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). The criteria for receiving this award includes being recognized by at least four class 1 railroads and having zero non-accidental releases (NARS) during a calendar year. Such releases can occur during loading or off-loading of products or in-transit due to improperly secured railcars. This award speaks volumes to Kemira’s commitment to safety and railcar management best practices.

In 2011, Kemira’s North American operations had over 8300 shipments of hazardous materials with ZERO non-accidental releases. Leading to the receipt of the Grand Slam Award, Kemira’s North American operations was recognized as a recipient of all five of the railway safety awards for the 2011 shipment year, including:

  • CSX Chemical Safety Excellence Award
  • CN Safe Handling Award
  • UP Pinnacle Safety Award
  • NS Thoroughbred Safety Award
  • BNSF Safety Award
“The health and safety of our own employees, our partners and customers are central factors in all of our decisions”, says Gary Hale, Safety and Security Manager. “Preventing leaks and spills is our responsibility as a good corporate citizen and sustainable company and it is something that Kemira views as top priority.”
