Kemira Operon participates in the management of Mäntän Puhdistamo – synergy for all parties

Mäntän Puhdistamo Ltd. in Finland treats wastewater for Metsä Tissue, the Mänttä-Vilppula municipality and Mäntän Energia. Kemira Operon is responsible for the management of the plant. I act in two roles at the plant,” says regional production manager Mika Ojala. “As the manager of the plant, I work closely with the plant’s board, planning future investments and financing. As production manager, I supervise the operations, maintenance activities and process development.

In Mänttä, all parties gain synergies from the arrangement. The municipality supplies water containing phosphorus and nitrogen and Metsä-Tissue organic material consuming oxygen, so there is no need to add nutrient chemicals into the process.

Energy-efficiency is also an important component of the design: Mäntän Energia utilizes the waste created in the process by incinerating it for energy

The right mix of chemistry expertise and smart technologies

Fast responsiveness in alarm situations is important. This is why a remote control capacity was added to the control system in a recent renovation project. If there’s an alarm at the water treatment plant, we will know instantly, wherever we are. That increases operational reliability and reduces the risk of unpleasant surprises, Mr. Ojala states.

Kemira KemConnect™ is a solution for data-driven chemistry application, bringing together the right mix of chemistry expertise and smart technologies. It allows real-time process monitoring and performance optimization.

We have Kemira’s extensive global application know-how and R&D network at our disposal. It is very likely that many other organizations have faced similar challenges. Solutions are usually found quickly, Mr Ojala notes.

Kemira Operon: the right level of service for each need

Operon’s service offering has three levels for water treatment plants: service, operation or management.

In the service model, Operon provides the customer with a set of agreed water treatment services, such as water treatment process management, optimization of the process/energy, management and maintenance of facilities, and sludge treatment.

In the operation model, Operon is responsible for running the water treatment plant. The municipality or industrial enterprise owns the plant, but Operon is responsible for operations – either all of them or to the agreed extent.

As a manager, Operon runs the water treatment plant in a role similar to that of an owner – providing the entire operation of the plant as a service to customer.

Each sector has special requirements for water treatment. Operon has solid experience in many different sectors: municipal, food industry, as well as metal and paper industries.

Operon tailors its service palette and operating model for each customer need. If you are interested in learning more about the services and offerings we can provide, please contact Pekka Koskinen, Managing Director, Kemira Operon, pekka.koskinen(a)kemira.com
