Water stewardship

Our goal is to improve our water management by 2025 to what is known as leadership level according to the CDP Water Security scoring methodology. Kemira is in the business of chemistry for water management. Not only do we provide a world-class portfolio of solutions that secure clean and safe water for society, we set an example with our own water stewardship.

Target

Reach Leadership level (A-/A) in water management by the end of 2025 measured by CDP Water Security scoring methodology.

We believe in clean water and sanitation for all. Our actions set the example of world-class water management

Water scarcity by site locations (baseline 2023)

Kemira’s manufacturing processes require water primarily for use as cooling water and process water. When it comes to managing water in this context, our goal is two-fold. First, we take steps to minimize our water consumption, especially freshwater consumption. Where possible, water is recycled and/or reused at our sites to reduce water withdrawal, consumption, and discharge.

Second, we limit or avoid water discharge activities that negatively impact the quality of the natural waterways on or near our sites. Fortunately, most of Kemira’s water consumption takes place in locations with low or very low water scarcity risk. At the handful of sites we have in areas of high water stress or scarcity, we put extra emphasis on water stewardship. (SS-38-41)

Evaluating risk

At the global level, water scarcity risks are assessed using scenario analysis. Other risks such as river floods, flash floods, and tsunamis are included in our climate risk scenario analysis.

We take additional steps at the site level. Each of our sites includes the identification, assessment and response to water-related risks in their risk assessment process. These are regularly audited by accredited ISO 14001 auditors. We report the results in our sustainability reporting system.
